Early Life and Influences
Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, was born into an aristocratic family in Naples on March 8, 1566. His mother was Girolama Borromeo, niece of Pope Pius IV, and his uncle was Cardinal Carlo Borromeo. Despite his privileged upbringing, Gesualdo received no formal musical education. However, he was an avid player of instruments, including the lute, harpsichord, and guitar.
Gesualdo's early musical influences included Torquato Tasso, whose poetry he set to music in his early madrigals. He also studied composition with Pomponio Nenna, who served at the court in Naples. In 1593, Gesualdo moved to Ferrara, a renowned center of musical culture. There, he encountered the works of Ferrarese court composer Luzzasco Luzzaschi and was introduced to the experimental musical
