    יובל נולד בקיבוץ משמרות כחנן בוליבסקי לבלה ויצחק, ממייסדי הקיבוץ, שעלו לארץ ישראל מלטביה ומאוקראינה, כבן זקונים ולו שתי אחיות גדולות. הוא בן דורם של בני הקיבוץ, שלום חנוך (אביו של חנוך ואמו של יובל קרובי משפחה) ומאיר אריאל. בעודו תינוק, באוגוסט 1947, נהרגה אחותו הבכורה יעל[2] בהיותה בת 11, מכדור תועה[3] שירה באוויר חייל אנגלי שיכור[4].

    יובל התחיל ללמוד לנגן בגיטרה באזור מגוריו לאחר בר המצווה שלו, ומאוחר יותר המשיך בלימודי גיטרה קלאסית אצל חיים אסולין בתל אביב.

    יובל למד בבית הספר התיכון החקלאי פרדס חנה והופיע עם שלום חנוך, מאיר אריאל ואחרים, במסגרת להקת הנוער של הקיבוץ, שנקראה "המשמרון". הוא השתתף בחוג הדרמטי בבית ספרו וכישוריו אלו הובילו אותו ב-1965 לשירות הצבאי בלהקת הנח"ל. לאחר סיום שירותו הצבאי, למד פילוסופיה כללית ויהודית באוניברסיטת תל אביב.
